At
MindCrossings, our instructional designers
create learning that makes you think. When
you think, you’re engaged. And when you’re
engaged, you learn. How do we get you
thinking and keep you engaged? We start with
proven principles of adult learning and then
apply our own MindCrossings’ techniques
based on the latest industry research and
our own experience. The result? Motivated
learners and smarter businesses.
Learners have different learning styles
Present material in a number of different
ways that appeal to the different learning
styles, utilizing:
- Colorful photos, charts, diagrams, and
other graphics with text for visual learners
(approximately 30% of all learners)
- Compelling audio voice-over for auditory
learners.
- High-quality video, where possible, for
both auditory and visual learners.
- Engaging exercises and other “learn by
doing” activities for kinesthetic learners.
Typical learners have a capacity for
learning and remembering approximately seven
new items or concepts at a time.
Create easily understood building blocks by
chunking content into logical segments.
- Arrange content from simple to complex.
- Present new concepts one at a time and
show where the concept fits with the big
picture.
- New information is more readily
understood when it relates to information
already known.
- Build on existing knowledge or skills by
breaking content into introductory and
advanced courses, or courses customized for
the job functions in your particular
business.
- Use illuminating analogies and metaphors
whenever possible.
Learners are motivated to learn when they
see a need for the information or skill.
Use a pre-test or other
device so that learners can see for
themselves that they do not have the
knowledge or skill.
- Use customized scenarios to set the
context and explain how the information or
skill will be used.
- Incorporate testimonials or quotes from
known experts and sponsors to motivate
learners.
When adult learners are bored, they stop
learning.
Use variety to keep the learners engaged.
- Change the screen or element every 10 to
30 seconds.
- Divide content into small lessons,
preferably 5 to 15 minutes in length.
- Include challenging exercises and
questions throughout the course.
Learners need to mentally process the new
knowledge or skill in order to retain it.
Require input from learners to move forward
in the course.
- Provide frequent opportunities to apply
new knowledge and skills.
- Give feedback for both correct and
incorrect answers.
- Include practice exercises for each
lesson.
Combined with our proprietary
IMPACT methodology, we are able to
successfully design, develop, and deploy
measurable learning solutions, that work.
Together, we can make your business
smarter. Now.
